We are Gareth Smith and Jenny Lee, husband and wife directors and designers based in Portland, Oregon with a passion for filmmaking, animation, and design.

At Smith & Lee, we specialize in inventive, hand-crafted design for film, documentary, and television.

We take a personal, hands-on approach—remaining deeply involved in every stage of the process. By working directly on all the projects we accept, we’re able to be selective and ensure the highest level of quality from concept to completion. When you work with Smith & Lee, you work with us.   • Our work exhibited at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Walker Art Center

  • In 2016, we were invited to present our work as part of the 21st Century in Design at Viacom exhibit in New York

  • We’ve served as jurors for title design competitions at SXSW and The Motion Awards by Motionographer

  • Gareth spoke with Roman Mars and Ian Albinson about title sequences on 99% Invisible

  • Gareth taught a Kinetic Type course at UCLA Design Media Arts

  • Gareth’s hybrid live-action and animated short film, This Guy is Falling, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001

  • Jenny’s work behind the camera has taken her to Tokyo, Tibet, and Sierra Leone. Her early short film Home is a visual tone poem of winter in New York

  • We love corgis. Ours is named Ella Bella

  • We have some awards to share

… And if anyone is still reading, we met while working together on the Broadway musical Wicked doing video projection design with projection designer Elaine McCarthy. A two-year, long distance relationship followed, and then we were living in the same city, and then we found ourselves collaborating on a title sequence for Jason Reitman’s first feature, and then sixteen years later, we found ourselves making this website.
