The 12th Victim

Main Title Sequence and Archival Graphic Treatments
Directed by Nicola B. Marsh

This four-part documentary series revisits the notorious 1958 Charles Starkweather and Carol Ann Fugate murder case, in which the teenage couple was charged with the brutal, random killings of 11 victims.

We were brought on by our friends at Tremolo Films to create the main title sequence, as well as graphics and archival treatments used throughout the series.

The title sequence was particularly challenging. We pitched a concept that involved projecting archival imagery onto panels of glass and capturing the reflections entirely in-camera—eschewing CGI in favor of a more tactile, analog feel. Working with glass meant long hours in the dark, navigating complex lighting setups, and improvising each shot in real time using shards of glass, a rotating platform, and an iMac as our light source.

It wasn’t easy, but the final result reflects the fractured nature of the story itself—suggesting multiple points of view, hidden layers, and the distortion of memory over time.
